句型一|result from vs. result in(因 vs. 果)
CCD may result from air pollution.
Pesticides result in the death of bees.
✗ 弄反方向:result from 後接「原因」,result in 後接「結果」。
同義:be caused by(起因於)= result from;lead to / cause(導致)= result in。
+ 修飾語(= 名詞 which/that is/are + p.p.,被動)
Plants treated with pesticides pass chemicals to bees.
= Plants which are treated with pesticides...
對照:the honey given to her(被給的蜂蜜)、the poisoned bees(中毒的蜜蜂)皆為 p.p.
句型三|Without + N(= If it were not for,假設語氣)
Without + N, S + would / could + 原形V(與現在事實相反)
Without bees, about half of our food supply would disappear.
= If it were not for bees, ... would disappear.
Without 引導假設時,主句用 would/could + 原形(✗ will)。
Without = If it were not for = But for(與現在相反);與過去相反則 would have + p.p.。
Being + adj./N ..., S + V ...(= Because/Although + S + be ...)
Being tiny but important, bees deserve our protection.
= Although they are tiny but important, bees...
句型五|be referred to as(被稱為)
refer to A as B(把 A 稱為 B) A + be referred to as + B(A 被稱為 B)
This situation is referred to as Colony Collapse Disorder.
被動時 to 與 as 都要保留:be referred to as(✗ be referred as)。
同義:be known as / be called。refer to(提及、指的是)也是常考片語。
